Playing with Tradition by Richard Hutten

Location

Milano, Italy

Date

April, 2025

Project type

Designer Carpet Collection for Jaipur Rugs

The Playing with Tradition collection draws inspiration from the rich history of hand-knotted rugs and the fascinating designs that have evolved over centuries. I began by selecting patterns that are hundreds of years old and reimagined them with a modern twist. This involved introducing elements such as 3D textures, blending traditional motifs, or playfully layering confetti-like designs. The colors of the confetti draw from the vibrant hues of India’s Holi festival, adding a lively and celebratory dimension. For a touch of humor, I incorporated bananas—an homage to the slapstick comedy of silent film legends Laurel and Hardy and Charlie Chaplin, where slipping on a banana peel became an iconic gag.
