Luca Guadagnino designs two important carpets for Jaipur Rugs, commissioned by Homo Faber 2024

Jaipur Rugs is pleased to announce its participation in Homo Faber 2024, the prestigious exhibition of contemporary craftsmanship curated by the Michelangelo Foundation that takes place in the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, Venice. With artistic direction by Luca Guadagnino and Nicolo Rosmarini, the immersive experience on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore brings together over 300 artisans from around the world. Jaipur Rugs is delighted to be one of the few ateliers that has worked in close collaboration with Luca Guadagnino himself, who has specially designed two carpets of exceptional scale, created to match the proportions of two historically important rooms.

The Cenacolo Palladiano Carpet
One of the commissioned carpets is a tour de force at 25m long, designed specifically for the Cenacolo Palladiano, a refectory built by the great architect Andrea Palladio and which is considered the most important room at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini. The carpet itself is based on the watercolour painting that Luca designed for the Homo Faber 2024 logo. With abstract splashes of block colours, the carpet gives a contemporary nod to the fresco at one end of the room that is attributed to the Italian renaissance painter Paolo Veronese. That painting, titled Wedding at Cana, features a grand feast taking place at a long table. In a case of life imitating art, Luca Guadagnino has imagined the immersive scenography of the room as a reinterpretation of this scene. A long table on top of the Cenacolo Palladiano Carpet by Jaipur Rugs will be overflowing with objects of craft from around the world.

The Padiglione delle Capriate Carpet
The second carpet designed by Luca Guadagnino is a riot of Memphis referencing motifs and bold colours. Crafted in a distinctive rhombus shape, the postmodern design will anchor the Padiglione delle Capriate pavilion, filling the room with its exceptional proportions.

Craftsmanship
Both carpets designed by Luca Guadagnino for Jaipur Rugs were handcrafted at Jaipur Rugs ateliers in Mirzapur, the historical centre for carpet making in north east India. Commissioned after a visit to Jaipur by Andrea Tomasi, curator of Homo Faber, the carpets were created in record time, with a design process that centred on Milan, where Luca Guadagnino is based and where Jaipur Rugs has a gallery. The enormous proportions of the Padiglione delle Capriate Carpet meant it was created in five parts, which will be woven together on site in Venice. The carpets are some of the largest created by Jaipur Rugs.
